Deboer Wetsuits

This past season I had the opportunity to test drive a Deboer wetsuit after several of our athletes had been racing in them and enjoying the feel and performance.

Im a bit conservative when it comes to new gear and new entrants into the wetsuit market and before I gave the Tristar Team a thumbs up of approval, I met with Daniel Clarke (Former pro triathlete and Rep for Deboer) at our Lake Placid race camp to let me test out a wetsuit in the open waters of Mirror Lake.

What follows are the cliff notes of the suit and why we have formally decided to work with Deboer as one of our team sponsored products.

The feel

  • Super supple and comfortable to swim in, much like second skin or cozy set of of PJ’s.

  • Its an odd feeling to be wearing rubber that feels like you are wearing next to nothing.

  • Thin in places where it needs to be and ultra flexible for a great range of arm motion within the stroke cycle.

How it performs

  • “Slippery when wet”, moving through the water with relative ease and compared to other wetsuits with far less constriction for a more relaxed feel in the water.

  • Compared to other wetsuits the speed factor seems to be similar if not the same even though the total thickness is less.

  • Helps free up the shoulders; the DuraFlex material sits at only .33 millimeters thick and helps the muscles to remain relaxed rather than fight the material.

Pro’s

  • Perfect suit for beginners; On raceday you can feel more confident and relaxed before heading into the water as the suit is less constricting. More traditional wetsuits feel tight especially in the arms and chest which can increase the “panic mode” and fear associated with open water swimming.

  • A Proven brand worn by world Ironman world champions; Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf, two uncompromising athletes when it comes to performance and thats a fantastic endorsement for the brand.

Cons’s

  • No product is perfect and Deboer is one of if not the most expensive wetsuit brands on the market. “I remember when gum used to cost a nickel” Well, its 2020 and gum is no longer a nickel and this wetsuit combines both performance and comfort. Fortunately, our team sponsorship allows for best pricing.

  • If you are an athlete that relies on a taught wetsuit to “prop up” your form as form fails, the Deboer design may not help. This is this point where you should train and practice to hold best form for racing. (Learn more at Tristar swim)
